New York Travel Tips with Ryan Fitzgibbon

New York

New York Travel Tips by Ryan Fitzgibbon editor of Hello Mr. Magazine

Be inspired to step off the well travelled path and live like a local in the iconic city of New York with these unique travel tips from Ryan Fitzgibbon, Founder and Editor of Hello Mr. Magazine.

THREE WORDS TO DESCRIBE NEW YORK…Relentless, motivating, and unmatched.WHEN I’M HUNGRY…

Stay out of my way. Also, you might find me at Westville for some simple, healthy grub.

A HIDDEN GEM OF THE CITY…

Local diners always get overlooked or quickly ruled out over the shiny white-tiled café’s, but there are so many great cheap-eats all around. My favourite is Manhattan Diner in Greenpoint near my office. Breakfast and a coffee for $6USD is pretty hard to beat!

MY FAVOURITE HOLIDAY DESTINATION…

I have a difficult time relaxing, so when I go away for a holiday, I generally prefer visiting a city I haven’t been to before and spending at least one day working from cafés so I can experience a new metropolitan area like a local. I think next on my list is Portland, Oregon or maybe Montreal, Quebec. I also tend to gravitate to places where my magazine, Hello Mr. has a high volume of readers, so I can assess the scene and maybe meet some while I’m in town.

WHEN I’M NEEDING RETAIL THERAPY…I pop into Alter in Brooklyn. It’s a pretty small boutique, but they have the best curation of brands that completely fit my style. MY FAVOURITE CULTURAL HOTSPOTS…

MoMA PS1, Prospect Park, Brooklyn Bridge Park, and the Highline (on weekdays only).

WHEN TRAVELLING I ALWAYS TAKE…

My notebook, a ballpoint pen to capture my thoughts with, a permanent marker to make to-do lists, and a red marker to make edits.

PERFECT PLACES TO SIP AWAY THE NIGHT IN STYLE…Rose Bar at Gramercy Park, Maritime Hotel in Chelsea, The Ides in Williamsburg, or Buvette in the West Village. IF I DIDN’T LIVE HERE I’D STAY AT…

The Wythe Hotel in Brooklyn or an Airbnb in the West Village to live like a local.

MY CARRY-ON MUST HAVES…

Headphones, face wipes, moisturizer, a back-up lip balm, and some reading material for the take-off and descent.

Tokyo Travel Tips with Rei Shito

Street fashion photographer and blogger of stylefromtokyo.blogspot.comRei Shito has published two books on the unique street style of Tokyo. Now she shares the best spots to shop, eat and drink as well as those hard-to-find hidden gems in her hometown.

THREE WORDS TO DESCRIBE TOKYO…Clean, cosy, exciting!

WHEM I’M HUNGRY…

My favourite place to eat is Pignon, a french bistro in Shibuya. It’s small, cosy and the chef there, Rinpei-kun is a friend of mine.

A HIDDEN GEM OF THE CITY…

The vintage shop Desperate Living in Shibuya is a great little secret. It’s only two minutes from Shibuya station but it’s hidden away in a very old building so it’s hard to find.

MY FAVOURITE THINGS TO DO IN A NEW CITY…

I like to go for a walk and watch how people live in a new city. As much as I can, I like to live like the locals.

WHEN I’M NEEDING RETAIL THERAPY…I love to shop at Peaches & Cream – an amazing vintage shop hidden away in the Aoyama area.

MY FAVOURITE CULTURAL HOTSPOTS…

I love Mori Art Museum for its beautiful art and views of the city. It’s on the 53rd floor in Roppongi Hills. I recommend visiting in the evening – visit the museum first then take in the view of Tokyo with its incredible lights.

WHEN TRAVELLING I ALWAYS TAKE…

My camera (FUJIFILM X-T1), iPhone, travel wallet and a book to read.

PERFECT PLACES TO SIP AWAY THE NIGHT IN STYLE…Oak Door in Roppongi is one of my favourites – lovely and yummy!

IF I DIDN’T LIVE HERE I’D STAY AT…

Palace Hotel is sophisticated and stylish and the staff are so kind. It’s in the very centre of Tokyo but it feels so calm. When reserving a room make sure you ask for palace views – they’re beautiful.

TIPS FOR TRAVEL ORGANISATION…

Always use a travel wallet! I always use mine wherever I go.

Singapore Travel Tips with Jo Soh

Singapore

Singapore Travel Tips with fashion designer Jo Soh

Jo Soh’s fashion label Hansel has been gathering global success across Singapore and beyond. Here Jo shares the best spots to wine, dine and experience the diversity of Singapore.

THREE WORDS TO DESCRIBE SINGAPORE…

Modern, multi-cultural and HOT!

WHEM I’M HUNGRY…

I round up some friends, book a table in their back alley and pre-book the signature dishes at Kok Sen Coffee Shop (30 Keong Saik Road).

A HIDDEN GEM OF THE CITY…

The view of the city from the Henderson Waves Bridge.

MY FAVOURITE HOLIDAY DESTINATION…

New York and Sri Lanka!

WHEN I’M NEEDING RETAIL THERAPY…

Nothing beats Orchard Road!

MY FAVOURITE CULTURAL HOTSPOTS…

Little India and Katong.

WHEM TRAVELLING I ALWAYS TAKE…

My favourite pen, pencil and a stack of recycled paper held together with a bulldog clip to sketch, write and design grand plans for the future.

MY GO-TO PLANE OUTFIT…

A comfy ensemble of a tee paired with loose pants (both from hansel, of course) and a wrap.

PERFECT PLACES TO SIP AWAY THE NIGHT IN STYLE…

I go wherever the talented mixologists from Mixes From Mars pop up. They are currently operating their Mars Bar at The Duxton Hotel (83 Duxton Road).

IF I DIDN’T LIVE HERE I’D STAY AT…

I have had great staycations at The Singapore Resort & Spa Sentosa, which offers lovely relief from Singapore’s urban jungle.
