Be inspired to step off the well travelled path and live like a local in the iconic city of New York with these unique travel tips from Ryan Fitzgibbon, Founder and Editor of Hello Mr. Magazine.
THREE WORDS TO DESCRIBE NEW YORK…Relentless, motivating, and unmatched.WHEN I’M HUNGRY…
Stay out of my way. Also, you might find me at Westville for some simple, healthy grub. A HIDDEN GEM OF THE CITY… Local diners always get overlooked or quickly ruled out over the shiny white-tiled café’s, but there are so many great cheap-eats all around. My favourite is Manhattan Diner in Greenpoint near my office. Breakfast and a coffee for $6USD is pretty hard to beat! MY FAVOURITE HOLIDAY DESTINATION… I have a difficult time relaxing, so when I go away for a holiday, I generally prefer visiting a city I haven’t been to before and spending at least one day working from cafés so I can experience a new metropolitan area like a local. I think next on my list is Portland, Oregon or maybe Montreal, Quebec. I also tend to gravitate to places where my magazine, Hello Mr. has a high volume of readers, so I can assess the scene and maybe meet some while I’m in town. |
WHEN I’M NEEDING RETAIL THERAPY…I pop into Alter in Brooklyn. It’s a pretty small boutique, but they have the best curation of brands that completely fit my style. MY FAVOURITE CULTURAL HOTSPOTS…
MoMA PS1, Prospect Park, Brooklyn Bridge Park, and the Highline (on weekdays only). WHEN TRAVELLING I ALWAYS TAKE… My notebook, a ballpoint pen to capture my thoughts with, a permanent marker to make to-do lists, and a red marker to make edits.

PERFECT PLACES TO SIP AWAY THE NIGHT IN STYLE…Rose Bar at Gramercy Park, Maritime Hotel in Chelsea, The Ides in Williamsburg, or Buvette in the West Village. IF I DIDN’T LIVE HERE I’D STAY AT…
The Wythe Hotel in Brooklyn or an Airbnb in the West Village to live like a local. MY CARRY-ON MUST HAVES… Headphones, face wipes, moisturizer, a back-up lip balm, and some reading material for the take-off and descent. |
